The Beethoven recordings of 1967

Eugen Jochum rehearsing Beethoven IX in 1967

The Beethoven recordings for Philips were made during the 1960-s with the Amsterdam Concertgebouw Orchestra. These recordings are on the one side recalling the great German tradition (dating back to the end of the 19th century) of Beethoven performances but on the other side provide the listener with a full stereo account.
Eugen Jochum seems never to have been interested in "sound" only, but the "sound" on (and of) the record should exactly match his imagination and experience on the Pult. The Amsterdam Beethoven Cyclus is rightly illustrating the integrity of his approch.
